Costa del Sol Holidays
The Brits’ favourite holiday hotspot Spain ( Costa del Sol Holidays) cost less today than it did five years ago with prices crashing by 40%, a survey reveals today.
According to a report by the Post Office, The Costa del Sol is now the bargain beach capital of Europe with eight holiday essentials totalling £37.72, compared with £60.20 in Turkey and £71.73 in Greece.
Strong sterling and price dropping by the Spanish to bring back the Brits has made it an affordable summer holiday destination, with the pound also going further in Portugal.
Experts say Turkey – which was the better deal last year – could miss out as it is now 60% dearer than Spain.
The Post Office Holiday Barometer found Bentota in Sri Lanka was the cheapest out of 40 worldwide resorts for sunshine breaks with eight must-haves, from sun cream and meals to soft drinks, costing just £27.95 compared with expensive Oz where the same staples cost £115.69.
And popular American getaway Orlando was almost twice as expensive as Spain with a total of £72.90, but better value than sister resort Miami where the same holiday essentials would set families back £104.55.
Sarah Monro, Post Office head of travel money said: “The winning destinations will be those that offer good value not just for flights and accommodation but for tourist staples like meals out and drinks.
“Holidaymakers will be looking very carefully at their own finances before committing to a holiday – 2012 will be all about affordability.”
